Skin Science By Clare Hird · Nurse Prescriber · Oxfordshire

One of the most common misconceptions I encounter in my practice is the idea that 'hydrated skin' and 'rejuvenated skin' are the same thing. They are not — and understanding the difference is the key to knowing which treatments will actually make a difference to your skin in the long term.

What does skin hydration actually mean?

Hydration refers to the water content of the skin. Dehydrated skin lacks water — it looks dull, feels tight, shows fine lines more prominently and tends to feel uncomfortable. Importantly, dehydration is a skin condition, not a skin type — even oily skin can be dehydrated.

Traditional skin hydration — whether from topical moisturisers, hyaluronic acid serums, or injectable skin boosters like Baby Glow — works by increasing the water content in the skin. The results are often immediate and gratifying: the skin looks plumper, more luminous and the fine surface lines temporarily disappear.

But here is the important part: hydration alone does not address the underlying cause of ageing skin. It improves the appearance temporarily, but it does not rebuild the skin's structure.

"Hydration improves how the skin looks today. Rejuvenation changes what the skin is capable of doing tomorrow."

What is facial rejuvenation?

Rejuvenation goes deeper. It refers to the actual restoration of the skin's structural components — primarily collagen and elastin — which are the proteins that give skin its firmness, resilience and bounce. As we age from our mid-twenties onwards, we lose approximately 1% of our collagen every year. By the time we reach our forties, this loss becomes visible as laxity, fine lines that persist even when the face is relaxed, and a gradual loss of the facial structure that once felt effortless.

True rejuvenation targets this collagen and elastin loss. It does not just make the skin look better temporarily — it triggers the skin's own repair and regeneration mechanisms to produce new structural proteins. The results are slower to appear, but they are genuinely different in quality and longevity from simple hydration.

Where does Profhilo Structura sit?

Profhilo Structura sits firmly on the rejuvenation side of this divide — and goes further than most treatments in this category. It is an advanced, regenerative injectable designed to restore facial volume, lift sagging skin and reorganise superficial fat pads. Rather than treating the dermis like traditional Profhilo or standard skin boosters, it works at the subcutaneous level — deeper in the tissue where the structural changes of ageing actually originate.

As we age, the fat pads of the face descend and redistribute, and the foundational scaffolding beneath the skin weakens. Profhilo Structura addresses these changes at their source — integrating into the subcutaneous tissue and triggering a regenerative response that improves both quality and structure from within. The result is a subtle lift and natural-looking volume restoration, without the artificial over-filling that comes from filler placed incorrectly.

What makes it different from other skin boosters?

Most traditional skin boosters (including Baby Glow, which I use regularly with excellent results) work in the superficial dermis and primarily improve hydration and surface texture. Traditional Profhilo also works at a dermal level to trigger collagen stimulation. Profhilo Structura goes deeper still — into the subcutaneous tissue — making it a structural treatment that can lift, restore volume and reorganise fat pads in a way no superficial treatment can replicate.

In clinical studies, Profhilo Structura has been shown to significantly improve skin laxity, firmness and quality — outcomes you would not achieve from hydration alone.

Which do you need?

The honest answer is: most people benefit from both, but at different times and for different reasons. Here is a simple way to think about it:

"The question to ask is not 'what will make my skin look better tomorrow?' but 'what will make my skin healthier in six months?'"

The clinical reality

As a nurse prescriber working in Oxfordshire, I see clients who have been using expensive skincare for years with limited results — because topical products, however good, cannot penetrate to the level where collagen is produced. The skin is a remarkable barrier, and while good skincare has a role, it cannot replicate what is achievable with the right injectable treatment delivered to the right depth by someone who understands the anatomy.

I always start with a thorough assessment. Not everyone needs Profhilo Structura — some people need hydration, some need volume, some need a combination. Understanding what your skin actually needs, rather than following trends, is what separates a good aesthetic consultation from an expensive guess.
